Any ideas on lighting and other techniques? My pictures of people always turn out amateurish!

Use decent lighting. Indoors, I've got three Lowel ViP Pro lights and shoot through and bounce off umbrellas to soften the light. Outdoors, sunny days are best shot in the shade to avoid harsh shadows.
