Recently shown flaw in windows graphics infastructure allowed execution of a program. And if that can happen, stuff hidden i nthe picture could be extracted, and ran technicaly.
Anything can be infexted if a application preforms specific steps to look for, and access such code in the everyday mediatype it handles.
While microsofts problem (which has been fixed) is known. A up and coming image viewing for example, can have coded in, to look for somethign in a image at a certian point in that file (all in code mumbo jumbo). If it finds it, it handles it a certian way. Such as re-assembly, and execution of a virus if certian system conditions are met. Be it processing power, file content and soforth.
