You figure a bike helmet gets exposed to the elements, so it's not gonna melt if it gets wet. If the inside gets wet, that could cause it to mildew and the liner to break down eventually.
Wash the outside with mild soap and water, rinse and dry thoroughly, don't immerse it in water, just use a sponge on the outside and then towel-dry it. The visors are meant to be replaced, if yours is dirty or scratched, try the same thing with some mild soap and water, but if it's too far gone, a replacement is like 10 bucks. Clean the chin strap also, same story. If you can afford it, put your helmet in a helmet bag when you're not using it, some kind of slip-cover to keep it from getting scratched or dusty. It'll look nicer when you do use it, and maybe even last a little longer.

The part that gets the dirtiest for me is the face shield. I use a gentle cleaner like windex to wash off dead bugs. I generally just wipe the rest of the outside with a damp cloth. Washing the padding on the inside really depends on the helmet. Many have removable liners that can be taken out and hand washed and left to air dry before reinstalling. I generally wear a bandana under my helmet just to keep it from getting too sweaty and gross.

Warm water, with some dish washing liquid in it, for the shell., and visor. If you've got a removable liner, then take it out, and wash it by hand, in a tub of warm water. If it's not a removable liner, then pat it, with a damp sponge, and allow it to dry, in a shady place. Don't use any solvents, to clean any of it, what ever you do.

You can wash the out side with plain old fashion soap and water.
Spray with (Rain Clear).
The better helmets have a removable liner, you can wash with liguid laundry soap. Air dry.

Use window cleaner and a soft cotton cloth on the face shield.
On most good quality helmets, you can unbutton the lining and toss it in the washing machine.
