Generally accepted antibiotic choices for bladder infections include:

Nitrofurantoin
Cephalosporins
Sulfa drugs (sulfonamides)
Penicillin
Trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole
Doxycycline (should not be used under age 8)
Quinolones (should not be used in children)

Pyridium can also be Rx'd in conjunction w/the antiobiotic for pain relief.

The decision to prescribe one medication over another is usually made after considering several factors, including antibiotic effectiveness, side effects, cost, and the possibility that the bacteria may be resistant. You and your doc can decide what's best for your personal situation. Feel better.

You need to see a doctor to get the right antibiotic for a bladder infection. If there is any blood in the urine, GO NOW

In the meantime you drink hordes of water and lots of cranberry juice to make the kidneys flush the system. To avoid future bladder infections drink lots of water, drink a glass of cran juice a day and go pee alot, don't hold the urine.

There is an OTC called AZO, which will take off the painful pressure. Many times a UTI (urinary tract infection) will cure itself.

Be smart. Listen to your body.

I've certainly been prescribed an antibiotic for a bladder infection (I'm allergic to penicillin) and it worked pretty damn fast.
