I am backpacking around the world and would really like to see these countries. I intend to keep a low profile and not broadcast my nationality.

Just as a precaution if your not Muslim, and especially a girl, wear a hijab (a scarf over your head) and preferably an abaya ( muslim dress) and if you can speak arabic well, that would also be a good start :) . Are you in the middle east right now? Good luck!

I am not american but I am european (Belgian) and went to Jordania (which is much quieter than say Syria or Iran). Most people werent friendly (cept the vendors... of course they make money off you), even had young guys give me the finger and some frowing at me and all. Basically I didnt feel very welcome.

So yeah you could go there but being american dont expect people to be nice with you...

They are definitly pretty countries but with everything going on these days I would never go there, especially if American or English.

There are many other pretty countries for you to visit, countries that like occidental people such as you and me.
