I prefer shows like LOST, a show which constantly re-invents itself season after season, but shows that revel in formulaic plot devices tend to be much more successful (think Will and Grace, Friends, etc.)

After two seasons of LOST, I can say with confidence that neither season is alike. Yet a show like Friends stuck with the same plot device twisted several different ways over the course of several years and was wildly successful. Can LOST succeed when it is constantly taking risks? (I hope so!)

I agree with Hiphop Grandma there-- these shows will continue to do well as long as the faithful keep watching. It's nice to have shows that challenge your mind instead of relentless "reality" shows that have no reality to them.
But, there's a difference in shows such as Lost and Friends...
Friends (and Will and Grace, Seinfeld) is a sit com- no thinking required just a simple escape from the everyday droll of our own lives. Lost is more of a drama..... and it's sad to think that lots of people aren't interested in shows that make one use their brains.

P.S. Eureka really is a good show as well.

I actually LIKE this question. I personally prefer shows that challenge your thinking, whether it's understanding something, trying to figure something out, or challenging your opinion. Unfortunately, the viewing public seems to prefer predictable shows where thinking is not only ont an option, but not really an issue. Too bad, they don't know what they're missing. Have you tried Eureka on the SciFi Channel yet? You should.

a good television show is hard to find and everything has be so done. reality shows have taken over and even they are starting to recycle. eventually the only way we will be entertained is by strapping cameras to our own ceilings and watching ourselves.
