Because for some reason or another, girls identify with certain male characters. In my experience, female yaoi fans have intense dislikes for female characters, so they end up pairing their favorite male characters, especially the ones they identify with or feel sorry for. Most of my experience with yaoi fans comes from my GW days. I used to discuss this type of question with a very good friend of mine, and we decided that a lot of rabid yaoi fans chose their pairings because they (the fans) actually would like to be with the..um...guy on the bottom, if you'll pardon my terminology. We also noticed this in fanfics (mostly) by teenage girls. As far as yuri, well, I think it isn't so popular because (like I said) female fans in the U.S. just don't gravitate toward female characters. I've also had experience with yaoi fans that actually make the fandom a "cause" because they have gay friends or relatives that they are very protective of. I also have an acquaintance that is bi, but she doesn't make a big deal out of being a yuri fan. So, actually I think this is a really hard question to answer simply because there are a lot of variables to keep in mind. Of corse, a lot of what I just said applies mostly to fans of non canon pairings. It seems to me that fans of canon pairings are far less outspoken about their favorite couples. Also, one would think that guys would be into yuri, and I'm sure quite a few are, but overall I think that guys just like anime for what it is, and don't dwell all that much on the emotinal aspects.

I think it's most likely because guys like hentai more than yuri, also the fact that more girls like anime than guys, (almost all of my guy friends hate anime but I'm not saying that no guy ever like anime) and about (this isn't real, it just seems to be) 90% of girls will be interested in seeing to guys they like being in a relationship rather than the guy being in a relationship with a girl. They would Get Jealous. (like me XD) I am a big yaoi fan and I don't really even know why. It's the same thing as I said, I get jealous when I see my favorite guy character in an anime be with a girl, but not when it's my other favorite male character. It just doesn't make me jealous for some reason. XD I hope this helped a little bit. ._.

Well, girls are a lot more into romance than guys. And since straight girls, well, like guys, there is a lot of yaoi which is mostly targeted towards females. But then guys are more into... well porn. So there is a lot of yuri hentai in comparison with yuri anime/manga with actual plot and romance. I personally think that girls who are into romance and plot get their yaoi, and then guys who just want to see lesbian sex get yuri. Not to say that there arent yuri romances (and there is definitely a lot of yaoi hentai ;p)

Thanks again for answering my last question Mutt. Anyways, I read manga for the content, not just looking at the girlxgirl or guyxguy relationships. If it has a good plotline, I'm in. Yellow, one of the more graphic yaois out there, I heard has a good storyline. I'm straight, but it looks interesting, and I don't see anything wrong with reading it. but my question is the same as hers, why is yaoi more popular. I guess in america, anime and manga are more popular to girls...maybe.

I think it's because there are more female fans and their pretty obsessive. And, Yaoi isn't really just for girls. My homo and bi friends are all fans of Yaoi-infested series (Gravitation, Papa To Kiss In The Dark, Earthian, etc). Remember, America is basically homophobic, and that's why we don't see Yaoi and Yuri DVDs in the local Walmart or Blockbuster. Yuri isn't as popular also because guys don't watch it as much as they watch Hentai.
Hope I helped some.

Yaoi is written by mostly females where yuri is written by mostly males. I think when it comes to those types of story-lines that they both tend to follow (romance), there is a large female audience. Not to say that males do not like romance. It might be easier for girls to relate to the characters in the BL animes because another female wrote it, while knowing they will have a large female audience.

because they catergorize yuri as hentai now instead of three subjects they have two so for people to like yuri they also like hentai and for a lot of girls the japanese people will make their characters like eachother in order to get more girls to watch the anime this is what they did for gundam wing and get backers.so yai is more popular because it is directed towards more girls who think that certain characters are ''gay'' with eachother when it was just some fan girl who thought oh they look good togather so i'll write a story of them having sex

I don't know. I love yaoi, though. It's hot. But I haven;t read much yuri. I probably would like that, too. It is probably more popular because two guys- so adorable!

I find it hard to believe that Yaoi is more popular than Yuri, but then again...more and more gays are starting to come out of the closet.
