It depends on where you are living. There are strict school districts where you would physically have to go to court and get custody of your niece. Then you have the other schools that will cut you some slack. Another factor is how long your niece would be staying with you. You don't want her moving around a lot. This should be a long-term decision. All in all you need to call the school (where your niece will be going to) and ask about your situation and they will tell you where to go from there.

Most schools have a regulation that states the child should attend the school in the district where the child spends 75% (or some other number) of their 'waking hours'. THerefore, if this childs parent(s) live elsewhere but the child is housed at your home.. then the school district where you live will take precedence. There is no restriction to legal or permanant residence.

Contact the local school and talk with their admissions group.

Hope this helps and good luck.

Well, if you're the legal guardian, I'm not sure that you would need anything. Just fill out the sheet with your info. I'm not real sure though. If you call the school, they'll be able to tell you for sure.

I would suggest getting a letter from her mother stating that you're the legal guardian for the time being and that she'll be living with you and you'll need her birth certificate.

You have to get a letter from her parents stating that they left her in your care and you are her legal guardian.

Well, my husband was able to enroll his son into school when he doesn't have any custody and his name is not on the birth certificate so you shouldn't have any problem. But, I guess it depends on the state too.

there are a few things you can do:
call the school and see what they advise you to do.
call family & children services in your area and see what they advise you to do.
call family court in your area and see what they advise you to do.

i know that is she is living with you for a full school year, you are allowed to declare her under your personal taxes, in which if you are single you become head of household.
