ITT has campuses all over the country and is accredited by the ACICS. Their tuition is nearly $450/credit hour, offer books in tuition, and offer degrees in many tech fields. They have expanded into business also. Are they a scam or are they legitimate?

They're legitimate, but you're better off spending the money to get a degree in Computer Science or Information Science at your local university or community college. Computer jobs are in less demand than they used to be and a college degree will probably get you further than a degree from a technical school.

It's not a scam, but proprietary schools like ITT aren't for everyone. They're great if you want a career focused education, because that's their purpose. They're also good if you need some extra help getting through school - perhaps you aren't good at school, or your prior academics weren't good - they'll work with you to help you study, to help you get to class, to help you learn to do the work so that you can graduate.

And it depends on your career goals. If you want to be a techie on a help desk, or an automotive repair person, ITT may be perfect. But if your career will require more - if you want to be a computer programmer, or a CEO, or a marketer - then ITT isn't the right fit. You'd need a full university instead.

With all that said, oftentimes a community college is a less expensive option for a person who is looking at schools like ITT. But a cc has less of a "hand holding" approach. At a cc, you need to be more self-driven than at ITT. At ITT, as I said, they'll help you through. At a cc, the help is there, but you need to ask for it.

So is ITT legitimate? Yes. Is it right for everyone? No. You need to look carefully at yourself and decide what type of school is the best fit for you.

The best way I can see to determine that is actually to approach another university. Find a university you KNOW is good. Then ask them if they would accept credits from ITT. If they wouldn't, ask them why. If you do not like the answer, don't attend.

Honestly though, I think that if ITT were a scam they wouldn't still be around. ITT has been around a LONG time. If it IS a scam, it's a good one.
