I’m presently locked into my current job until June 07’ and looking at becoming a firefighter then. I don’t have any on-the-job experience in the firefighting. Does anyone know of a good place to start?

Granted volunteering is a good place to gain experiance, and a GREAT place to pick up bad habits. Most paid departments prefer you know little so they can train you their way. If I were you I'd look at obtaining a college degree, It will be a huge asset towards promotions. Good luck

My husband used to be a firefighter, and has looked into getting back into that again. The best place to start is with being a volunteer. Talk with your local fire department and see what they do in regards to that.

Become a volunteer. Fire departments are always looking for volunteers. You may also want to look at taking some courses through your local community college that deal with safety/hazard issues. Good Luck to You!

Every big city in the world has a fire training academy that usually runs 2 classes per year. You get through that, you can pretty much write your own ticket to fight fires anywhere in the world. There are a few websites that you can sign up for e-mail notifications for classes. The best one is: http://cms.firehouse.com/content/section/content.jsp?sectionId=8

Volunteer departments are a great place to start. You get your feet wet, see it isnt like it is on tv and get some training. A combination department is even better, half volunteer half career. THey might give you all your training and a job.

Volunteer firefighting. I would also look into getting EMTB certified.
