why three dots?
why not four,five,six,...etc?

I'm not sure why exactly we use three ... but they are called ellipsis. It is used to indicate a missing word or phrase and sometimes used to indicate a trailing off sentence or to imply that the sentence could continue. See the link below for more.

The etc. stands for the Latin phrase, "et cetera" which is translated as "and so on." So, naturally we use it when we are giving a list of things that could just go on and on and on, etc.

this is just a guess. but one would look like a period, two dots might look like a period that became a typo. Three dots looks deliberate and not like a typo. Anything more then three would look excessive because three dots gets the job done.
