I have been told that that if you remove the food source then they will leave. I have spread insect killer, but the problem is that I have a lot of worms in the soil and it is almost impossible to get rid of earthworms, and I understand that worms are their favorite food. I have also tried the spiked traps with limited success but I’m looking for a more permanent solution.

Buy a big gun and sit on your porch~ lolz, just kidding, in any case, the fastest way to get rid of a pest is to hire a professional, they should get them out relatively quickly. Search the yellow pages for the companies.

There is no permanent solution - if your yard is attractive to moles they will keep coming, all you can do is limit the damage they do. Ask yourself how much of a problem they really are. If you can live with them, do, because you'll save yourself a lot of trouble.

If you can't, the only tried and trusted methods are poison such as strychnine - which is usually restricted to licensed practitioners for good reason - and traps. Other methods at best just move them around. In my 2 acre plot I have caught 15 moles year to date, using scissor traps. You say you have tried traps with limited success - once you have caught one or two moles you know you have the right approach, just keep doing it.

Key things to remember are as follows. Act promptly when you see any new digging (never be tempted to say "I don't mind them in that area" or "I'll put some traps in next week"), always lay down several traps in separate sections of tunnel, and always replace a trap that has caught a mole, because a neighbouring mole may well take over that tunnel within hours or days (I caught four in one week in one tunnel in the Spring).

Tip 1: cut a 10" length from the base of a wire hanger, with 1" of the shoulder corner left on; this makes an excellent tool for locating tunnels, feel for changes in resistance as you push it into the soil (the hook at one end is to help pull it out).

Tip 2: new moles that move in will often re-use deep old tunnels, so do a daily patrol of areas where you have caught them before.

Tip 3: New planting is particularly attractive to moles because the soil is loosened - easy digging - and watered - more worms - and they will rip through the roots incidentally. I have had an entire 40' new hedge wrecked like this. If you want to protect important new plants, surround them with heavy duty 2' high chicken wire (below ground).

Now, review whether you can tolerate them!

Final thought: many people never see a live mole in their lives, if you get the chance to winkle one out of the ground alive and well then show your kids, but watch out for the teeth and claws, they do not make good pets.

I hate to say this but there is no permanent solution. If you are using the traps. I've found decent luck by walking along the tunnels and then watch to see which ones come back up. That tells you which ones they use most, and that's where you set the traps. Also if you don't mind a tacky solution, put those fake spinning flowers in the tunnels. It worked for my grand parents, but there yard looked real funny at times.

I have had good success using highway flares to gas them. Get about a dozen flares and light two for each hole. Pack the loose dirt around them to keep the gas in the tunnel. This has worked three times for me over the years.

Moles actually eat larvae that are pests as larvae and as the beetles they become. Moles don't eat vegetation, they just leave tunnel mounds around the yard, which actually helps to aerate the lawn. I have moles, but let them feast on the Japanese Beetle larvae, which is a much bigger problem to me.
