Very good question sir! Honus Wagner who played from 1899-1917 for Louisville and Pittsburgh for many years was regarded as the best of all time by many people including N.Y. Giants manager John McGraw. He is without doubt the greatest shortstop in baseball history as far as I'm concerned.

Hits 3415
Doubles 640
Triples 252
Homers 101
Average .327

Honus also won 8 batting titles which is second to only Ty Cobb.

I don't think he's forgotten by those of us who read a lot about the game's history, but I think there are a couple of reasons why he doesn't get a great deal of attention from most people.

First off is the fact that he played back at the turn of the century, and most discussion of "old-time" baseball only tends to go back to the Black Sox or the early years of Babe Ruth. It's the same reason why a guy like John McGraw or Cap Anson is thought of as a manager, simply because their playing careers happened so long ago. The same could be said of legendary pitches like Tim Keefe or Pud Galvin, guys who put up incredible numbers in a time that is rarely discussed by today's casual fan.

The second reason why Wagner gets ignored is that he played before the days of huge home run numbers. He was in the top ten many times throughout his career, but he never jacked more than 10 in a season. Not that he wasn't a power hitter, but the balls were used until they almost fell apart and most ballparks didn't cater to home run hitters. If he had played twenty years later, it's likely that his power numbers would have been 2-3 times higher.

Well, sorry if I don't give you a good expanation, but this is what I've got:

Honus Wagner was one of the best baseball players in history, and we all know that. Maybe he's forgotten because there are so many new baseball players now that are making ball history. We have players who hit homers, players who are on steroids, and just other tidbits of information that is much more exciting then that. But, I'm so sure that if you find one of his baseball cards that are rare, you won't be forgotten!

Well, that's all I have. Hope it helped. I'm a girl who loves baseball, so hopefully I helped!!

i do not particularly imagine he's forgotten. i fairly trust that any credible authority (in different words, each and absolutely everyone of whose opinion i might want to fee) might want to revere him as one on the staggering gamers of all time in his respective era or any era. i imagine the actual undeniable reality that maximum extreme respondents right here do not trust he's forgotten is a sturdy piece of evidence. should you've forgotten about him, i might want to doubt their recognize-how, their acceptance and/or their love for the interest, hence i might want to less costly the exclusion altogether. On that note i imagine we ought to continually organize a Honus Wagner revival. Write him in on your close by ballots for city sherrif. enable's supply Mickey Mouse a run for his funds we will march instantly to Washington and demand the acceptance he benefits! enable's turn all those non-Honus believers into worshipers of the church of the Flying Dutchman!

Probably because it was so long ago. In an age of non-home run hitters he hit over 100 homers. Back then it was something. He hit 330 lifetime and has over 3000 hits.He could also steal bases. This guy is definetly one of the greats. Its sad that these kind of players are overlooked.
