I have been researching but would still like to get advice from the public. I'm a student from Singapore and I really want to emigrate to another country. America and Australia are the best choices I have since I heard from my uncle that the Europeans are generally racists against Asians though not obviously.which I want to study and live in that country for a long time so I can't afford to regret my decision. My plan is this: emigrate in about 2-5 years time (hopefully 2 years), then university and settle down there.
I need help and advise in which country to choose, if so, then which city and also, reasons whether economically or socially.
I really appreciate any enlightenment in this problem

Well, I plan to major in Geography and minor in History. Prefer a more relaxed life (main reason for emigrating) I don't have relatives living either place, only friends that confirmed that they moving to Australia (they're still here in Singapore)
About the democratic part, I guess it's easier to move then to change the nation

Well I am from Australia & have travelled a lot. Australia is on the whole a very friendly mulitcultural country. In fact it IS THE most successful model of multiculturalism in the world.

Melbourne is renowned for it's culture, the art's, movies and shopping and very wide street's & boulevard's .....

I am from Melbourne & We have a lot of Asian's, a lot of Greek's {The most outside Athen's as Melbourne IS the second biggest Greek city in the world} - We have lot's of Italian's etc etc etc.

Sydney has a large Lebanese gang culture & hence has a lot more violence than Melbourne. We have lot's of Lebanese too but we don't seem to have that level of violence. For example I think there'd be more crime involving gun's in Sydney than Melbourne.

Sydney has terrifc Weather - a magnifcent harbour & beaches and has great night life, restuarants etc etc.

Melbourne is way colder in the winter but Melbourne has the countries best restaurant's, theatre and IS SPORT mad. We had the commonwealth Games this year & next year we've got the world swimming championships. In Melbourne we host the Australian Grand prix in formula one & in Motor bike riding. Melbourne can have four seasons in one day weather wise. We also host a leg of the world surfing championships at torquay on the Great ocean Road which IS in the Top TEN most beautiful drives in the whole world. Melbourne is also the spiritual home to Aussie Rules Football the oldest code of football in the whole world where 50000 or MORE Regularly attend matches EACH week in the season. Melbourne is also home to the great Melbourne Cricket Ground {MCG}.

Perth is apparently great though I haven't been there - come on Perth people promote ya city. Adelaide is small but friendly i've been told. Brisbane and Queensland is Sensational - Queensland has the Great Barrier reef & the world heritage Daintree Rainforest. I have friends visiting the Northern Territory & are loving it up there & enjoying Darwin's Asian Relaxed type of lifestyle. Tasmania is VERY beautiful & so green but sooo cold.

So it might be biased but come on down - not here yet? Where in the bloody hell are you then???????????

By the way though i've never been there I do have a few Canadian friends & from what i've seen it would have my next vote - They're a friendly bunch over there. A bit backward in sport though but hey only one country can be perfect {Just kidding guy's}

haha the 1st answer definitely doesnt stay near Asia..

anyway, nvr move to America.

Australia or the UK is the best option for us Singaporeans..

Both these two countries are very well developed for us Singaporeans and we'll find it very comfortable to settle down..

Also, australian education differs slightly from Singapore's so it will be easier to adapt, whereas American schools are either too hard or too easy and anyway, Australia can be trusted more..

So go for Australia! although i would have said the UK if you had mentioned it..

but whats this I hear about EUROPEANS. being racists.
French, Spanish and Italians are racists, and maybe Portugese..

EVeryone else, especially Brits and Germans love, or at least accept everyone else.. Don't you see how many Indians there are in England? I could go there right now and feel right at home.

anyways, australia IS closer to home.. DO NOT tell me you're abandoning Singapore, which gave your parents baby bonuses. Whahaha!

This will give you an indication of some social/economic stats for both countries.

Both countries are pretty okay..but I'd prefer USA for studies. As in ALL countries, both countries have racism to some extent. Job opportunities are pretty rough at the moment in the USA, not sure about Australia. Cities to stay, I think practically, will depend on what job you get. I mean, if you get an administrative job, it will definitely be clustered nearer to the capital, right?

But the feedback from some of the posters are valid. Australia is definitely nearer to Singapore...makes it easier to visit relatives/parents etc.

PS: for what it's worth, personally, I think Singapore is best..simply cos it is geographically stable (no earthquakes, tornadoes, hurricanes, tsunamis etc), it is safe, and cos I love the healthcare here. Don't get me wrong, I love USA..I stayed there for two years with my family and we found it generally great living there...despite 9/11, sniper shootings, some racism, Americans are a great people (they put me to shame at times with their resilience, creativity and independence) and USA is really a beautiful country. But nothing beats Singapore, my island home!

It depends on what type of living standard you like. Basically, I will choose Australia over America. The main reason is tt I hope to have a more relax lifestyle rather than a stressful lifestyle and I have friends who actually migrated to Australia telling me it is quite Ok over there. But I know that there are some city tt is quite biased against Asian but I am not too sure which are the cities

I live in San Jose California and it's a beautiful 8:00 A.M. here and this is the best place on earth. 1/2 hr and your swimming with the babes in Santa Cruz. 3 Hours and you're skiing the slopes 8 months out of the year. The night life is awesome, just don't drink and drive. This is the technology center of the world (Silicon Valley). San Francisco is 40 mins away. Asians are everywhere and very welcome.

I would go to Australia before America. I live in Canada which in my opinion is the best place to be. I have never lived in another country but have no desire to leave my wide and vast home land. The economy here is steadily growing and the natural resources are in abundence. It is a beautiful country just north of the US.

Come to Canada man. Im sure ud enjoy your stay and i believe Canada is more multicultural than other countries. Instead of having a melting pot effect (lose sight of your language and heritage) In canada we have a multicultural fabric where your language and ethnicity is encouraged and drawn out to grow while also learning about our culture. My cousin is from singapore too and he enjoys his stay here. It also helps since u get to avoid getting drafted into the army ;)

If you are trying to avoid rascism stay away from America. Europeans are much more open minded then most Americans. America has good university programs in Geography but I don't know anything about the other countries and they may be better. Austrailia would be your better bet ... or another country.

Depends on what you are looking for? What are your hobbies? What kind of education you are looking for and etc.

If I were in your place my first choice would be Australia- It's relatively close to Singapore, it has much nicer people (I'm biased, since I'm an Aussie) and we receive legal asian immigrants very well here!
