No it's not odd to show yourself on cam.
On cam you can see who you are talking with.It's almost like being in the same room

Ya I have the same opinion as you, sometimes I find it quite odd to show your face to strangers and you don't know what they will do to your video capture (if you know they actually can record your webcam). So I usually don't do it here until I am talking to my family back in my hometown.
