It never ceases to amaze me how people give so many bad answers on the simple "What's the difference between a Tornado-Hurricane-Typhoon-Cycl... questions.
Hurricanes, typhoons and cyclones are the same storms, just different locations. Hurricanes are Atlantic and eastern Pacific storms, typhoons are northwestern Pacific storms and cyclones are southern Pacific and Indian ocean storms.
Myths:
A typhoon doesn't rotate opposite a hurricane. They rotate the same direction. A typhoon isn't a hurricane over land. Typhoons are not storms around the entire Pacific ocean. They're only in the Western Pacific. Mexico and Hawaii do get hurricanes. A typhoon also has an eye. A typhoon isn't "stronger" than a hurricane. In fact, the strongest landfalling tropical cyclone on record is a hurricane, and that was Wilma, but typhoons tend to be stronger because there's more ocean water to work with in Asia.

Nothing. Just the area in which they are in. In the Pacific, Asia and Japan they're called Typhoons. Every where else they're hurricanes. Every where else they're cyclones.
