sorry to say but yes people wont want to hire you when your pregnant especially if you are really far along. their reasoning is that if they hire you now, then in a few months you will need to take maternity leave. they are willing to do that for their female employees, but they have been there longer and have "earned" it so to speak. they would lose money on you because they would spend money on training you then lose money while you are gone on maternity leave. what some companies do for their women while they are on maternity leave if they do an important job that needs to be continued while they are gone is hire a temp.
no its not fair, but there really isn't much to be done. really, this is the whole reason many employers never hired women back in the day. they knew they would eventually get pregnant and have to take leave or maybe leave for good. but now adays even men can take maternity leave to be there for their wives. either which way, you can still look. there might be some employers out there who would be willing to work for you. you could also try temp agencies and get a job for a few months.

I'm about 3 months pregnant and am considering getting a part-time retail job. When I'm at home and not busy, I think/worry too much. I just figure that unless the job states that there is heavy lifting or long hours standing, that I'm not going to disclose the fact that I'm pregnant unless asked. My sister worked at her job up until the week before she gave birth so I don't see any reason why a company would not hire someone, at least part-time (since most companies don't give benifits to part-timers.)
But, if you have probs. finding a job, this might be a good time to think about getting a small degree or some schooling, with financial aide, you might not have to pay anything up front, then you will know you can get a job when your baby comes. I've heard Medical Transcription is a good work from home job and I think you just have to take some online classes to get certified. Anyway, good luck!

Yes, it is true. No, it isn't fair. I also live in Michigan.
They won't want to hire you now b/c it will be temporary, and in a few months, they'll be looking for someone else, and have to train that person, too, and that will be temporary, b/c once hired, legally they cannot fire you b/c you are pregnant, and they can't fire you while on maternity leave, so they have to let you come back, but it is so much uncertainty, they don't want to bother.
I am with you on this one. I had to 'quit' my job at 20 wks pregnancy b/c I was working with the mentally ill, who have a tendancy to become violent. I moved to another part of the state, and no one is going to hire me, I know this....
It can be so frustrating, I know. Is the baby's father in your life still? Is he providing support? Contact WIC, and DHS if you haven't already, there are programs that they will help you with. They will give you cash assistance if you go to a program called 'work first' 40 hours a week. This program will help you find a job. There are some that will help you temporarily. Good luck. It is harder to get a job, but it isn't right that it is that way. Employers are not supposed to discriminate if you are physically able to complete the job they hire you for. You could be a secretary or whatever. When I graduated from college I was 5 months pregnant and I didn't even bother looking for a job. Good jobs with benefits are hard to find while pregnant because they know you will have to be off work soon. Jobs are available though, if you look hard enough. I'm going to be a stay at home mom for a while after the baby is born.
I hear that you can type medical records from your home, maybe you should look into that.

Depending on the size of the place of employment, 50+ employees, the company has to offer you up to 12 weeks leave. Though unpaid! No one has to pay you for not being at work. All it does is insure that you have a job similar to yours with equal pay when you come back.
Potential employers are not to discriminate against pregnant woman, but they do, though they will say they chose another candidate because of better qualifications.
Such as life.
Maybe try a temporary agency for now.

well this all depends on how far along you are. If you are not showing yet then i would apply to the job and while going for my interview wear clothes that are kind of loose and dont make it apparent that you are pregnant. After you get the job slowly make it known, well the baby does that part by growing, after your hired they cant fire you because youre pregnant thats against the law. so what im saying is dont ask dont tell, but if you are showing then i would suggest telling them you'll work up until the latest you can possibly go to and you'll take maternity leave without pay

I think some companies are somewhat reluctant to hire expectant mothers, because they know they will be out for 6-8 weeks time, and worry that after training and paying them, what if they decide not to return to work? No, I don't think it's fair at all. Perhaps if you offered to take your maternity leave with no pay, it would help? As far as home-based jobs, I don't know of any legit companies that offer it. I don't know what kind of position you're looking for, but have you considered a temp staffing company as maybe a receptionist, where you fill in for absent receptionists or admin assistants?

there is a law about maternaty leave but only if you have been with the company for atleast a year. if you have not been with them for a year they dont have to give you leave with pay . but you still can get the weeks off.
Yes companies wont hire pregnant women becouse of the fact if something happens to her wile on the job. ther could be a probabilaty to get sued. it does not hurt to try some places would hire some dont and if you are not showing yet you might have a better chance of getting the job.
You might have to go to the aid office until you have the baby .Just try you never know.

It is a shame, but it is harder to get a job when pregnant. They are not suppose to not hire you because of pregnancy, but they can just find another reason not to hire you. They don't want to hire someone who will in a couple of months have to give maternity leave. It is hard but that is how it is. I wish the same happened to guys.

It is definately hard to get a job. Once you have the baby, they have no guarantee that you will be back you are considered a liablity for any training you would recieve.
Actually, it's only a federal law that your employer allow you to take 12 weeks of unpaid leave if you've worked for them for 12 months and you worked atleast 1250 hours that year.
There is no law requiring businesses to offer paid maternity leave.
