It's like a brain to the engine. It controls the right amount of fuel needed at time required by the driver dependant on the situation. ECU means engine control unit.

At the moment there is more money spent on electronics than anywhere else in development. The idea is to help curb the spending Honda have agreed to the spec ECU after a bit of wrangling, which suggests to me that they have developed something else probably in the gearbox/clutch area or maybe they know something they can manipulate inside the rules of Engine management. The level playing field never works. if the bikes are equal how can the guy in second place hope to catch the guy in first. equal bikes does not equal equal racing. its also a way to introduce rev capping. which should increase engine life - another cost cutter. which still brings us back to what Prototype racing is your now going to have the basic package of spec ECU Spec tyres Ohlins and Brembos that may as well be spec Marchesini wheels and if it keeps going a spec engine whats prototype about racing with different frames may as well call it frame racing. Its prototype racing FFS there shouldnt be any spec about it. if you cant afford to play then (expletive deleted)

ECU is the Engine Control Unit
its the little box of tricks that tell the engine when to fire the plug, how how fuel to put in. it monitor every thing, from the amount of air going into the engine, to it temperature, to the potion on the throttle, and it looks at all these values on it "map" and put the appropriate amount of fuel in, and decides at what angle to fire the spark to get the best burn, performance, or economy, depending how it been designed, or set up

Engine control unit. It's a computer that controls the fuel injection and ignition. In some cars, it may also have control over the transmission, gauges, or other functions.
