Birthmarks are colored skin spots that either are present at birth or develop shortly after birth.

A birthmark (also known as nevus) is a result of a development abnormality of the skin. One possible cause is that during the embryonic stage of fetal development (first trimester), cells that belong in the mesoderm (blood forming middle germ layer) get displaced in the ectoderm (skin forming outermost cell layer). This leads to proliferation of blood vessels or abnormal pigmentation in the dermal and epidermal structures of the skin, resulting in birthmarks. Birthmarks are perceived to be non-hereditary. In addition, twice as many females as males are observed to have various forms of birthmarks. However, scientists have not yet come up with an explanation for these phenomena.

Birthmarks are not a hereditary thing, you get these marks when you are born. I did not have any, but my daughter has a small circular mark on her belly, and a strawberry mark on the back of her head. The doctor tells me these are birthmarks caused by compression during birth, sort of like a permanent bruise. There is no significance to them, just a reminder of what happened when you were born.

A birthmark is a blemish on the skin formed before birth. They are part of the group of skin lesions known as naevi. The cause of birthmarks is unknown, but may include cellular damage due to radiation or chemicals. Some types seem to run in families.

A number of different types of birthmarks are known and mentioned in the link below.

They're a secret warning. Avoid strawberries on southern hemisphere trans-continental voyages. Seriously, they're simply skin lesions of the naevus family (the same as moles) without any real explanation. Chemical or radiation damage to cells can cause them, but most of the time they have no identifiable origin.

It simply means you're unique with 3 birthmarks. You'll acquire more 'marks' as you age. Dont give it a 2nd thought.

They don't actually 'mean' anything (apart from the fact you're obviously more important than the rest of your family!) but you might find it useful to chat with other people who have them at http://www.birthmarks.com/Index.cfm

I don't think they have any real meaning, hon, just a pigment difference in certain spots.
