You could explain to him that in the North it just isn't done the way he wants it to be done and it is hard to change. Tell all of the kids here will be the same way because he needs to get used to not hearing sir and he also will not be shocked any more when it doesn't happen. Tell him you don't like Karate any more and do not enjoy going. He will get the picture.

This is obviously a very important sign of respect that your Step Dad wants. I don't think it harmful for you to do this so why not just do this? There is nothing wrong with showing respect for someone else and it is good not to offend. If you were at some ones house and it is there custom and a sign of respect if you take your shoes off at their door before entering their home wouldn't you do it? There is nothing wrong with what your S-Dad is asking. You may have issues with him other outside of this and are using this as a way to with hold respect. If this is the case address those issues aside from this issue.

One has nothing to do with the other. "Sir" and "Ma'am" are used to show respect in society and are not only used by family but it the most sucessful businesses and businesspeople. You would be a wise person to continue to use those terms of respect regardless of whether or not you intend to take karate. FYI, karate is a good way to develop self respect and discipline and sometimes the best thing to do is continue to learn those disciplines (if nothing else) because they will benefit you strongly in you future relationships in society, school, and your career.

Sir is polite everywhere. My kids still say it to their dad as a form of respect and to all males. If you want to quit something because you don't like it be honest and let him know, but the "sir" has to stay. You should also be using "mam" too

First off, If you started it, You should finish it. When you become an adult, you will say sir and mam alot. Especially at a job. It becomes second nature because it shows respect. If you quit now, You will regret it later. Karate has alot to offer and teaches discipline. Good luck.

Well if you are confidant that he would not feel bad about it talk it over when he is in good mood. That could help. I wont mind saying sir to my dad. But its your life so its you who decide what you wanna do.

It's called respecting your elders. Never Never get away from that. And if you don't want to do karate anymore just say so,but always be respectful, you'll never go wrong. Good luck.
