i manually released the shift lock at the base of the shifter and it worked fine. Brakes worked, car moved, but still no brake lights. Will this problem be costly? and what IS the problem?

I manually released the shift lock on the shifter, and that got me out of park. Car drove fine but still no lights. Put car back in park and tried again and still nedded to manually release the shifter. All fuses are good, all fluids are full.

Honda Accord Brake Light Switch

I'm guessing one of two things. You're car probably has a safety circuit that requires you to step on the brake before shifting from Park.
It's likely either a bad brake light switch, or a blown fuse. Both are pretty easy fixes. The brake light switch is located under the dash and is in some way directly- usually above it- connected to the brake pedal.
(There may be 2 switches- some cars have a switch for the main brake lights as well as one for the high-level third brake light. Have a friend look at the rear of your car while you step on the brake to make sure.)
DISCONNECT the switch and check it with an Ohm meter. If you don't have one you can get a decent one at Radio Shack for less than $20.

NOTE: If the issue turns out to be a blown fuse, there is likely a reason for it. You may end up doing more troubleshooting to correct the problem. In this case an Ohm meter will be your best friend.

Good luck

test the brake light switch first under the dash at the pedal switch has two wires short the two wires with a paper clip bent will do brake lights light then pull the shifter, or if that fails look for the brake light fuse. Fuse blown try another same amperage.

could be a fuse, of could just be the little switch at on the brake pedal, it will cost a bit to fix, if U take it to a garage, as electrical fault are so hard to pin point where they are, and they will have to look for so long to find it.

U may be lucky and they find it straight away, or just know what the problem is, to fix it wont cost much, usually, but it the time taken to find the problem that costs the most
