you make it a burden for them to help out their siblings even if those kids are abusing it. if they will not help, you make them feel that you are disappointed.

especially if they work overseas. i just noticed that their families ask for money as if it's easy to get it. why?

Maybe this happens in other cultures too but since I only know about the Pinoy culture...

Mother has three children, two boys and a girl. Father is in the US and the kids were petitioned as single. Sister got married and was no longer able to go to US. Older Brother put off getting married. Brothers are now in the US.

Sister and Husband couldn't keep a decent job. Father and Mother gave capital for various businesses but businesses failed. Mother retired and gave her retirement pay to Sister for a taxi which never materialized. They ended up with a personal car!

Initially, Brothers had a hard life in the US. People in Pinas think living in US is easy. It's very hard specially when you're new. Life seems more hectic and unlike in Pinas where you can have a maid, you have to do everything yourself. You have to work in order to earn.

Brothers worked their @sses off so now they're quite comfy. Sister is also comfy, without a job, two maids and kids in private school?!? When Sister asked Brothers for monetary help, Brothers gave but stopped when they learned of how Sister was living.

Now, Mother says madamot ang magkapatid (brothers are stingy, ungenerous)

Sister was given the chance to make a better life, they even have a car, which is a big deal in Pinas. Brother did not have a car before, which is more of a necessity in US, since there are no tricycles or jeepneys. Mother could have (@ least) offered, which Brother would have declined. Brother is used to living within his own means.

So now, Mother is disappointed @ Brothers and can't wait to be a citizen so she'll have money from senior benefits to give to Sister.

Although I agree that there are families who do that, not all Filipino parents are like that. There are a lot of poor families here and usually they support one family member to be able to get a good job and ofcourse after he in turn should help the next sibling so they he too can get a better job. Ofcourse, this isn't a perfect world and there are people who are just too lazy to do things on their own so that plan isn't fail-safe. It can happen in any culture, not just Filipinos.

You are totally right. It is such a Filipino thing. I know because of personal experience and that of my relatives and friends. It goes back to familial obligations and Filipino traditions. We were taught since childhood that it is the child's responsibility to take care of the elders. And, that one sibling should share what ever successes he has had to the whole family.

Those who say otherwise, I'm happy for your progressive thinking and practices. But, they are in the minority.

Nope, not my family. My parents NEVER asked for anything monetary from us. Its a case to case basis. Dont generalize. That happens to other nationalities too.

its the Filipino family bond..
mothers are being contented in life just seeing her family helping with each other....

yes..ive heard many stories of that..

but they just cant be sucessful and the others are left behind...

and i will do the same if ever i was in their place...
but of course i will just "help" them not to cover up for them...
