There actually have been scientific studies that appears to show that prayer works. This, of course, does not prove the existence of God, but that the human mind has a greater control over reality than we think.
Look at the placebo effect when a human takes pills. Sometimes they're healed, soley because they think they are. In the same way, it appears that the human mind can will changes in the physical realm.
Even if God doesn't exist, and even if our mind can't heal others, telling someone that you're mediating and praying for their healing, can heal them, because the sick person will believe themselves better (placebo effect).
Love, faith and care are imbued into prayer. We as humans need so desperately that care from each other. Even if God doesn't exist, you will help yourself and others through prayer.

If you believe in God, you pray to him for the same reason you talk to your friends - to connect, to show appreciation for what God brings to your life, to ask forgiveness when you make a mistake, to talk about your hopes and dreams.
I find it interesting how many christians think that prayer is a way to wish fulfillment. I know that's how it's preached in some churches, but prayer isn't a way of getting God to make things go your way. In the Lord's Prayer, Christ only asked for the essentials "our daily bread" and for forgiveness. In all other things he wanted us to defer to God's will.
If you don't believe in God, you really don't pray. You might meditate, or make wishes, or wish someone the best, but prayer is talking to God.
Above all, you don't beg God to let you into heaven. Different people have different philosophies on how to get into heaven - the Bible says that all you have to do is to believe in God, but I have a real problem with the idea that God would let Phelps into heaven because of a technical detail, but bar some of my atheist and agnostic friends who are truly good people.

Are you in doubt or you are trying to imply that you don't believe in God? When people pray, they unknowingly ease their burden. Praying is somewhat psychological. But of course, the "psychological" thing only works when you truly believe in God whether it's true that God exists or not, and it is in the form of FAITH. Me myself do not believe but I still pray for those purposes, not because I've already tried them and tested, but because, I know the good effects. It doesn't mean that when you pray, you need to talk to someone. If you don't get the idea, better stop praying or you'll just compicate your life.

First of all I am sorry to say that being a "good man " is not enough to get into heaven....good deeds aren't enough either. Nor can you just pray to get in....read the Bible and it will tell you how you can get you name in the Book of Life....as for praying for a God you believe does not exist, WHY ARE YOU PRAYING IF YOU DON'T BELIEVE?!!?!?

I agree with you, you have to be a good man or woman to get into heaven.......BUT have you ever met a good person...someone who has NEVER lied, never even stolen ANYTHING, Never been mean, hurtful, selfish, self righteous, or hypocritical? i don't think so...one sin is more than enough to get you separated from God. I once saw it described in an object lesson where a cup of clean water was spat in twice.....there was much more clean water than spit in the cup but no-one would drink the water. God's like that...he doesn't want a dirty person.....so he sent Jesus and he can forgive your sin and then you are like clean water....God exists so i would recommend you pray to him

Honestly there is no "reason" to do so. It is a human attitude to seek help from someone stronger in times of trouble. For some people, this force is God

you pray to God because you believe in Him.... you pray not just because you want to go to heaven....but because you want to thank Him for the good and bad things that happened in your everyday life (yes even the bad, coz it makes us stronger and better person).
why would you pray if you believe He doesnt exist?

Yes God knows what we need, but we must humble ourselves and ask God for things. it's a sign of true faith, if we do not ask for things how will we get them.
