my husband has this car, 2002. The light came on and has been on, everything is running fine, we had the oil changed, the light re-set.....he's failed emissions twice due to the light being on, they say he passes the "smog" part but b/c the light is on they keep failing it......any ideas how I can get this light to go off, long enough to get the emissions passed or for good.....or know of anything that could be WRONG with the car.....we've had it checked and no one can see anything wrong with it. This is driving me crazy...his emissions was due at the end of last month and this is how long we've been dealing with it.

Thanks

Oh, the car has over 100,000 could this mean the engine is about to die?

These are made to come on at mileage intervals, most newer cars will come on at like 45,000 and again at about 100,000 to 112,000 miles.
They want you to bring it in and see if everythings fine. Nothing you can do will get rid of the check engine light that is on. You could change anything or fix eveything on the car it will stay on till the dealer or a garage pushes the reset button or code on the cars computer.
Call your local garage and see what they charge to turn it off.
Or you can pull the bulb out of the dash and or cover the light up with tape.
We had a 2001 honda that came on at 104,000 miles and the local garage said this was normal and said they wanted like $185.00 to check it out and reset the check engine light and if everything was running fine it won't hurt anything. So we let it go but around 190,000 miles it started doing weird things, but go figure it was 86,000 miles more and we had to replace the plugs and wires. The check engine light still stayed on and we still had no problems with car yet.
Ran great again.
No your engine isn't going to die.
But you might want them to scan it 1st to see if anything is wrong, usually costs about $35.00 at the dealer, but if you go to the garage and tell them your light is on they will come scan it for free and takes like 5 minutes. They will tell you your problem (IF ANY) but they won't shut the light off just what is happening.

We had that problem.. and here's a 'sneaky' fix.

Disconnect the battery for 10 minutes... Then reconnect and go to the emissions place. It took a week for the sensor to 'act' up and turn on the 'check engine'. Worked for me.

Have you taken the car to the dealer and had them see what sensor is making it light up? That should be a lot cheaper than having them fix it... just for peace of mind that it's not a 'bad thing'.

good luck

Take it to a garage or dealer. They will read the status codes from the computer and use that information to diagnose the cause. It does not mean that your engine is dying but there is something wrong with the emissions control systems.

Ya have to run the codes, hopefully its not a input speed sensor code,!! Clear the codes and take it stright to e-check,the Northstar engines are good engines and usually don't have problems if well maintained. If its a input speed sensor code don't take the car over 55 mph to get to the e-check place or the light will come back on,....good luck

Same light came on on Buick Century. by the time I reached the dealer--ten miles-the engine had burned a piston due to a faulty oil pump; car had 36,400 miles and I had to go to GM Central Office to get GM to assist in repair.

Take it to Autozone...they will check the engine codes for free and let you know if there is an issue...then take it from there.

what did the scaner say is wrong? 100 000 miles is not much. did you put new plugs and wires?
