As I've been in very poor health this summer I haven't been able to attend to my garden as much as I have in the past. Last week I finally managed to get out there and start tidying up when I noticed a very dry patch in the corner of my lawn. It turned out it was a large ant's nest, it had several "entrances" formed at the top and overall it measured about 6ft x 4ft. I've been able to kill the nest but now I'm left with a horrible dry patch.

What's the best way to fix this without it costing an arm and a leg?

I'm going to post a pic on-line later and paste the link to it here.

Thanks in advance!

Thanks for all the answers!

I'm going to try grub killer and watering, and if that fails, re seeding.

I have no idea who to vote as the best answer, they're all good, so I'm going to it award to the first answer!! ;-)

You need to go to your nearest hardware/garden centre and get some ant killer. Read the directions first, though, as some may kill Grass. Then, you will have to put some new sod & grass seed in the area.

Just had a look at your picture - looks to me like a grub infestation. My friend had the same thing - you can buy "Grub-Be-Gone" and it kills the bugs, but not the grass.

OK. You've killed the ants, and now you want grass there?

Just buy a bag of grass seeds. The ant's have dug about like mad in the area, so the ground will be very aerated, and easy to dig more. Mix in several hanfulls of the seeds, rake it around, and water like mad for a few weeks. Total money spent will be less than twenty dollars, even if you have to buy a rake... Well... I guess it could be much more if you need to get gas to drive out there...

Water the spot every day like a new lawn and make sure it does not dry out. The grass will constantly grow and eventually fill in the area. That is the cheapest way.

I agree with the previous answer, and it does look like you have grub damage, speaking from experience. Grub Out will not only kill the grubs, which attack at exactly this time of year, but it also kills ants.

Been there myself

Your grass will come back, no worries. Takes a month or so. Just water well.
