I've had several aquantances in AA over the last 20+ years that did themselves in. Several drank themselves to death, Liver disease, wet brain, diabetes, panacreatitis, stroke..

One guy came into AA about the same time as I did was having marital problems at about 5 yrs of sobriety, got drunk, went to his truck, took his shotgun and blew his brains out.

Knew of a kid in our church that hung himself, (speculation was it was a sexual thing)

I've known several that OD'd on pills.

I've known some patients (I worked on a psych unit in college) that slit their wrists, pills, or gun.

They did it because of emotional pain, The proverbial "Permanent solution to a temporary problem"

I think we've all experienced pain.. I've got a friend right now that is struggling with terminal cancer, she is in serious physical pain ALL the time. Her desire to live for her daughter is so strong she is willing it to happen. Most people would have gave up fighting a couple of years before .. She keeps fighting. I think the difference is people who see reasons to live override any possible reason to leave..

I have known several people who have. One man killed himself by hanging himself on his porch. The reason was because his girlfriend said she had gotten an abortion(the baby was his) Another man shot himself and it was because his ex girlfriend wouldn't get back together with him and said she was pregnant. Another one of my friends shot himself because his family just didn't understand him (that's what the note said). As for the others, im not really sure why. They never said.

I've known three girls who have attempted suicide. The first really was an "ugly duckling" everyone at school made fun of her to her face. My brother was friends with her and had to face down lots of people to force them to leave her alone. It finally just got to much for her.
The second was a girl onthe swim team I coached. Her father died, and she didn't want to live without him.
The third was a girl in the dorms in college. I never got the story on that.

My boss. His daughter was raped by a motorcycle gang and his wife left him. He began drinking heavily and then one day he put his mouth over the end of a shotgun and pulled the trigger. I wish I had known then how to recognize the signs of a deeply distressed person. Maybe then I would have been more of a friend to him.

I knew someone. She was bi-polar. She couldn't cope with everyday living: keeping track of expenses, shopping, paying bills.
She was forced into a hostel with other mentally ill people; but she couldn't stand it there because there were mainly old people there. Out of desperation she cut her wrists and had to be hospitalized.
One night she walked out of the hospital to a railway crossing and stepped in front of a train.
