Real happiness, other than visits of the feeling happy, is a constancy. Like anything other that you may call real, it needs to be realized as such. The problem with happiness mainly is that it does not have a fixed or tangible form. So unlike the good idea you may have for other things to appear in a for real form happiness will mainly remain formless.
It is most likely however that happiness is a matter that is on the inside of people. Things that come from the outside may at most have a temporary happy effect, but not that lasting one for it to be real. There are of course many ways to achieve happiness in a form that would pass as for real. But since happiness itself is highly intangible there are other easier markers to find out if you are really happy. Contentment is such a marker, being balanced is another, virtually being unable to commit crimes, there is a whole list really. Real happiness could be compared to the middlepoint of two weighing scales. Once you know happiness for real you will sooner make it back to that midpoint until you can no matter what remain there. So then happiness may come out as living as if nothing no longer matters, which is quite valid with the difference that you will at all time still be able to care.
In short happiness is balance to the max, thus free from all the inhibitions that make humans unbalanced. It may not seem like the ecstatic version of happiness that we all like so well, but it does not exclude that either. Being happy also makes you stronger mentally and possibly physically as well. In chemical form we get a lot of happiness out of Vitamin E.
I'm at least happy that answering this question puts me on level 4. But no happier than I was before really. It's just a marker, not the real thing.

Many of the people here have mentioned that happiness is being content with what you have. I going to have to disagree..kind of. I think that we as human have to grow and change. It's the act of growing and changing.
As an example, if Person A is happy with their life at the age of 27, that same person would not be happy with their life if it was exactly the same, at age 52. But one finds happiness is the changing of life and the growing and finding of dreams.

Happiness comes from the inside of a person, not from the outside. You are looking in the wrong place.

Happiness is a personal state of mind. Some have happiness with less material things, some have it with more. Some have happiness with a loving companion, some have happiness being alone.
Basically happiness is what you choose it to be.

YOu can't search for it. Just do good things, and be happy and content for whatever you are and who you are, and all the people that sorround you, then you'll feel happy, then has a happy face, also, you won't notice that you already feel the happiness that you're searching.

real happiness is beyond contentment... me myself do not need to find what's real happiness, because i am already contented with what I have... If you keep on searching for your happiness, the more you won't find it. and if ever you think you already found real happiness, you might end up thinking that what you thought is real happiness is actually not the real thing you're happy with... real happiness depends on your won personal needs and wants...

Its a compartment that is not influenced by external force nor a person or thing. Its the state of mind that triggers you towards it. Contentment, Thankful attitude, regard for others, mutual respect is the key to it!

Happiness is being able to forgive and love unconditionally, not expecting much from ourselves and others, and living life to the fullest by making the most of what we have.
