What type? I would suggest mexican red knee'd or pink toed...both great starter spiders....other here in uk you will pay probably 40 odd quid for one which is about 75 - 80 dollars...

Well it depends on the breed, and the store you buy it from, but they go for about anywhere from 20-50 bucks for the more domestic breeds.
I suggest starting with something common and one of the more placid species, like the Mexican red-knee, the rosy tarantula, or maybe a pink-toe. These are all within the 20-30$ range and are great pets to have. They are quite docile and are easily hald and manipulated even by small children.
The more expesive breeds, like Cobalt Blues and Ornamentals are more expensive and are too aggressive to hold.

Depending on the type and petstore, you can usually find them for a decent price. I've seen some locally (In SC) for around $50-$60.
