Just interested to get opinions here.

I'm female and 34. My lowest note is a D below middle C and my highest is probably top G (just above the stave) I can't really get any higher than that.

I have always beleived myself to be an alto or contralto - thats what I've always sung in choirs etc, I'd say I have the same kind of range as Amy Lee from Evanescence who is also supposed to be an alto. I've successfully performed a few Evanescence songs, they feel very comfortable.

So why oh why did one of my previous singing teachers insist I was a "lazy soprano" and keep giving me stuff that was way too high for me to sing?! I stopped lessons with her because it was just too frustrating!

You sound as if you're definately an alto. I studied music a few years ago at uni, and my singing teacher told me a similar thing and gave me songs to sing that were way too high and i ended up hurting my throat. You're quite right to get another teacher, one that will give you appropriate songs to sing that suit your voice.

I wouldn't consider you a contralto. You sound like an alto to me...possibly even a mezzo-soprano. An alto should be able to easily hit a G just above the staff...but an alto should be able to sing lower than that. Maybe you just haven't worked your way down that far. I'm a lyric soprano...I can sing from an E below middle C to and E above the staff...but it takes a lot of work to stretch down to those lower notes. In any case, I would call you an alto.

You have a similar range to me by the sounds of things, and I classed myself as an alto.

Lazy Soprano?? How rude!! I too can just about hit high G - but the way i look at it is that I'm a versatile Alto who can sing Soprano if needed

If it was classical training that you had, might explain the comment. You should find a teacher who will let you experiment and not take it so seriously. When I found my old teacher like that, I was with her for years

maybe she was trying to get you to utilize your head voice....maybe you're only using your chest voice.
