im disgusted that youre even attempting to compare the god that is maradona to a guy like zidane. sure, zidane was good and helped france, but maradona was a football genius from his plays on the field to his attitude. its not just playing well, its thinking like a champ and acting like one even when you lose....clearly zidane is not able to do that so he doesnt deserve the same treatment as maradona does.

Because Maradona is not just a good player like Zidane, he is not even a great player or national hero- he is that rare character that comes along and becomes the very essence of something special: watch Maradona and you watch Argentinian football and what it is all about. And football does not mean the same to the French as to the Argentines- there is no way he would not get a farewell game!

First of all, it would be more correct to say that Zidane hasn't had a farewell match, YET.

Three possible reasons:

1) Zidane is not likely to become a global soccer immortal, like Maradona, Best and Pele. We'll see in 20 years.

2) One could argue that Maradona's problems were personal and off-the-pitch, while Zidane's (regardless of provocation) brought the game into disrepute.

3) He never asked for one. He announced retirement prior to his last tournament, win or lose. Thus he played every match as though it were potentially his last.
