In September 1963 two friends of mine Patsy Viscardi and Anthony (tank) Castillano, convinced me to join the Marine Corps with them on the buddy plan. My reasons were different than theirs. At that time not as noble as theirs. I had seen the movie South Pacific and fell in love with Liat and wanted to go to the Island paradise of Tonga.
I never made it to Tonga, but my life would never be the same. My friends never showed up, I went in alone and no I wouldn't change it for anything. Two months later Kennedy was assassinated, two years later I was in Vietnam. Many years later I married a Filipina.
I tell our daughter , if not for this, she would have never been born.

I was hanging out with the wrong crowd in my Junior year of high school. I had some friends who actually went to my mom and my school counselor to discuss it. They sort of had a mini-intervention with me. I think it really made a difference in my life for the better. Even though I think one guy actually did it because he liked me and knew I was messing around with another guy, I am still grateful. That was in 1990 and I am now a fine, upstanding citizen!
