Because they are not happy with their lives or themselves. They just want to make everyone around them miserable.

I would say most people become selfish an greedy because they get tired of being taken for granted and used. They realize that most people really don't care about them. And they realize they have to take care of themselves because no one else will do it for them.

They learned that being selfish and greedy will get you much further in life than being selfless and generous. It's a career choice you could say. I'm still selfless and generous only because I enjoy being better than everyone else :)

Because people are many times given things instead of working for them, and there is no reason to appreciate what they have. Also we seem to be a society that believes that more stuff will make us better people, its called advertising and young people especially don't seem to get it. They are making money off your back. Stop buying stuff. The world will turn around.
