Our evolution takes a sequence: mineral - body - mind - consciousness ... at every stage every species lives with a limited evolutionary attainment in differing ratios of each embodied qualities ... and humankind alone has managed to dominate the potential of the mind in the last 35,000 years and only a few have managed to plumb the depths of consciousness in that period but they fall outside the domain of empirical research ... though the concept of QUALIA is inadequate ... atleast it shows the willingness of the scientists (though many are cognitive scientists) to concern themselves with consciousness ... under the context it is high-time ... with all the developments (however embryonic) in the fields of quantum physics, hypergeometry, hyperphysics, femtochemistry, cognitives and complexity sciences etc ... one gave/gives consciousness its due place.

Consciousness is the one using which we see everything else, hence it can't be seen even by other consciousness less so by instruments. It is like seeing the eye using the same eye

Good amount of research is being carriedout on this subject but none of them are going to catch it in a test tube and point out

One significant thought which is evolving after quantum mechanics is that consciousness might be existing right from the Big Bang time. If you are interested read "Tao of Physics" by Fritjof Capra or "Code Name God" by Mani Baumic

I completely agree with the above statement in that consciousness can not be measured in any way scientific. Only when the scientists have invented or discovered a way of delving into the functions of the mind will they be able to measure it, and this doesn't seem likely in the near future

The fundamental problem with giving "consciousness" the recognition it deserves in science is that it can't be measured quantifiabley. Science has been rather progressive in the expansions and consideration of theories that go beyond normal realms but the purpose of science is to measure and quantify. Mind and consciousness to date don't fall into areas of measurable solidity. Maybe one day.

In answer to your question, I don't think it's being given the same thought and seriousness as other sciences, but I have been studying the same concept. I'd like to hear your thoughts on it.
