Tartans are very old and jealously regarded. Their popularity was bolstered by Victoria, but they existed for a LONG time before that. Most of the stuff you see sold in stores and what-not, they're not real tartans. That's a generic term nowadays. But each clan has a specific tartan; each sept of a clan had a variation of that tartan. They're something like English badges, they denote who a fighter "belongs" to, so that your own people will know it's you under all that war paint and in the midst of battle won't cut you in half with the largest swords ever wielded. If you are a descendant of that clan, and can prove it, you are entitled to wear it, though, unlike 500 years ago, they won't flay you if you wear a tartan that's not yours.

The use of tartan by the tribes of Europe can be traced back nearly a 500 years prior to the birth of christ. Tartan, carbon 14 dated to 2000 BC has been discovered in Taklimaken China on the mummified bodies of caucasians. The Scots tribes tended to created checked tartans whereas other Celtic tribes wore coloured but plain tartan. The Americans tend to call tartan 'plaid' but this is incorrect. Plaid is actually a garment, not a pattern. Clan tartan was adopted during the 16th Century and became prominent during the late 17th, early 18th century.

Clan Tartans can be traced pritty far back, and most Military Tartans are Clan Tartans, can't think of the oldest one at the moment but in Falkirk a piece of tartan over 1500 years old was found...

Most tartans you buy in tourist shops etc are probably fake

They are real, and not just the Scots either. Many Irish family's have tartans and coats of arms too. You should try attending a Highland Games or something of the sort near your area. Cheers mate!

Tartans are very real but this shortbread Brigadoon version of Highland dress we get in Scotland makes me puke. It seems that every ugly **** with a big red baw face in Scotland gets married in a kilt when in all probability their ancestors where trying to wipe out all traces of Highland culture. The very worst "kilts" now incorporate a saltire on them I mean to say come on now.
