The most essential thing to do before you sing is warm up, its the bit that most people find boring and it is tempting to overlook it but warming your vocal chords can improve your vocal performance and also prevent injury and straining. If you have a piano (or any other instrument really) try finding the lowest note you can sing comfortably, then play and sing scales note by note until you reach the highest note you can sing comfortably, then just try singing a song you don't find challenging to sing that is well within your vocal range. make sure you drink some water at room temperature before you sing to hydrate you and avoid smoking, alcohol and caffeine. The last but definitely not the least important thing to mention is breathing. Unfortunately when excited or nervous our breathing patterns tend to change to short, shallow breaths which doesn't help a singer at all, so you may need to remind yourself to take deeper breaths from the diaphragm making sure your belly moves more than your chest when you breath. Good luck with your show! I'm sure you'll knock em dead :-)

If you’re like most people who dream of becoming a world-class musician or just love to sing, your goal is simple: you want to overcome your vocal barriers. You want to take your singing ability to the highest level.
And you know that across the world, more and more people are taking their voice to that next level.
Superior Singing Method - http://superiorsingingmethods.info/375/Video-Tips.html
But why do some of these ‘lucky’ singers seem to have amazing ability, perfect control, pitch, agility, confidence, and a huge vocal range – while you might still be struggling to improve your singing voice and have a masterful singing voice?
This is what makes the difference between a world-class singer and an average singer…
It’s all about how you practice and train your voice. Most ‘vocal improvement’ systems and techniques just give you a set of vocal exercises with NO direction and leave you on your own to figure out how to actually sing.
But at Superior Singing Method, I train you with a form of active vocal improvement to spark your inner singing ability, improve every aspect of your singing voice – which means that you will start singing the way you always dreamed while gaining a masterful control over your voice…with amazing power and a range that will let you hit every note with ease and confidence.
You’ll do this through a set of time-tested and highly refined vocal exercises that come together to train every aspect of your singing voice: a voice where you can sing with amazing pitch, better agility, more power, improved resonance and tone, and impress anyone who hears you sing.
The Superior Singing Method is like having a personal vocal instructor showing you exactly how your voice works, and how to work with each muscle group in your voice to get the results you want.
In Just 5 Minutes A Day, You Could Start Singing With Incredible Control, Power, Pitch, And More Freedom Than You Ever Imagined - http://superiorsingingmethods.info/375/Video-Tips.html

These days you can learn how to sing over the internet. Check out Aaron Anastasi's singing video lessons here: http://www.voicevideolessons.com The videos are very easy to follow and to my surprise extremely helpful even for advanced singers. For beginners I would have to say this is a gold mine. I was able to improve my singing, voice tone and range in just under two weeks and I am an advanced musician, been doing this for the last 13 years.
I live in New York City, I wanted to go to a singing teacher but that would have cost me over $1400 per month. Good thing with this internet, $1400 it's a lot of money for me.

Practice practice practice! Its the only way to improve on anythin.
I found that lessons were the only way to improve though as you often don't know what mistakes you might be making or where you could improve, and it takes someone else with a trained ear to point it out. It can often be rectified. My problem was poor breathing and "oversinging" which I was totally unaware of until my teacher pointed it out. It all made sense then.
Some singing teachers are awful though so beware and go on gut instinct, if you don't like the way they teach you, find someone else. I once went to a very eminent teacher (who has taught one very famous British female singer in particular) who insisted I was a "Lazy" soprano and kept giving me soprano stuff to sing - I am an alto, always have been and couldn't cope with the stuff she was giving me to sing, it was impossible as it was just too high!! As a result she declared I had "no talent" and it was a waste of time her teaching me!
It totally screwed up my confidence in my voice for a long time and I actually stopped singing for a while.
I have since changed to another teacher who lets me work with my natural voice within its natural limits and I am singing a lot better as a result!!! You have to work with what you have, thats a lesson I found out the hard way because of this other teacher!!!

To learn quickly how to sing I suggest to follow a good online course. here is the best course that I did :
http://www.goobypls.com/r/rd.asp?gid=541
I can help you with jus some advidce but anyway I reccomend to follow that course. I think that singing is an inbuilt part of the human mind and soul. For countless years the act of singing has been at the forefront of art, religion, social changes and of course love. We all have a desire to let flow with a burst of air and noise that lifts the soul and transports an emotive message be it from the screaming energetic rock anthem to the operatic tones of more studied precise singers. We are not all born with a natural talent though but with practice anyone can take their instinctual desire to sing and become very good at it. Here are some tips for a better singing voice that can help you professionally, at the karaoke bar or even in the shower for your own enjoyment! One mistake many singers make is to hold their breath while singing instead of letting the air flow through them. If you hold your breath tight you can never achieve a natural sound nor will you be able to achieve any great volume and it makes hitting the right tone harder as well. To combat this you must learn diaphragmatic breathing. This means you must breathe in to the lower part of your lungs by breathing deep and not shallow. This is not the same as belly breathing but should press out on your lower ribcage as you breathe in. There are many breathing exercises you can learn to help you achieve this such as lying down and placing a hand on the upper chest and a hand on the lower chest under the ribcage. When you breathe in the hand on the upper chest should not move and the hand on the lower chest should go up and down. Mirrors are great devices to help you improve your singing voice. By singing in front of a mirror you can watch your posture, your facial contortions and your breathing and determine what is and is not working. Try changing your posture and the way you use your face and mouth when you sing in front of a mirror and listen to the different sounds you make as you experiment. You will be surprised what straightening your back or opening your mouth wider can do to your voice once you see these things in the mirror.
I hope that the website I suggested could help you!

If you can shell out $14 visit www.learntosing.biz. It is the cheapest most effective vocal training around. Made by Ava Trachman, most of the techniques there can be found on other vocal training Cds that cost $200 and so on.
I bought myself a copy and it does work 4 me
One more thing singing along to other songs does not improve your vocal range or ability. It can get you stuck in a limited range ie when you try to sing someting outside the range of these songs, you find it difficult.

It's very possible to learn to sing well. You just need to know the right methods. Learn here https://tinyurl.im/aH6ZO Singing teachers will cost money and can be expensive so they're not for everyone. Singing can be learned so it's not an "either you have it or you don't" kind of thing. Whether you sound like crap or you're decent, I recommend this singing course. It's one of the best methods to learn to sing well in a short amount of time. It's all about using efficient techniques that work.

If you want to know a very good vocal coach try to visit https://tr.im/wMelP an online vocal coaching tutorial. Everything, ranging from breathing fundamentals, vocalizing exercises, techniques on singing high and low notes, how to not go off-key/out of tune/off-sync, musicianship and music theory, proper diction and articulation, and a lot more are covered, all in our native language. It can be quite technical in nature, but it really helps since it covers the musical aspect of singing deeply and not just concentrates on how to impress people with your vocal range, riffs and runs and other cliches that do not necessarily make one a complete vocalist.
