According to the bible, Lamech was the decendant of Cain and Seth. He had two wives and a number of sons and daughters, among them Noah (the guy from the flood) and Tubal-Cain.

Tubal-Cain's name is no accident - he is the seventh generation of Cain himself, who, owing to long lifespans recorded in the early bible, would have been still alive at the time. Both Cain and Tubal-Cain were therefore cursed by God... a fact which Lamech perhaps knew all too well.

Another story of the bible has the blind Lamech out hunting, being led by his son Tubal-Cain (why he's hunting while blind, I'll never know). A stray shot from Lamech actually strikes and kills the original Cain by accident, and (depending on the account you read) Tubal-Cain is then killed by his father either as the result of another accent or because the man decided that this was the time for God's curse to come to fruition. This story is called 'The Story of the Sword' because Tubal-Cain is credited with INVENTING swords.

In fact, Tubal-Cain is credited with inventing the entire field of blacksmithing. Because of his heritage and the mysterious and valuable nature of blacksmiths in general, this art seems in the early bible to be considered secretive and dark.

In those senses, there are lots of symbols and ideas that can be drawn from Tubal-Cain. He is the descendant of Cain, and punished for it, though there is no related misdeed that he is accused of ever performing. He is credited with being the creator of many tools and ideas. His sister's name is sometimes translated as 'pleasure', so there is another association with the possibility of sin, or perhaps with enlightenment outside of God. I suppose you can make of those connections what you wish.

I have heard that the Masons make use of him, as they do with a lot of different symbols. Given that they generally represent themselves with a mason's hammer (a tool such as Tubal-Cain might have invented) and their purported work is secret enlightenment, I don't find this too surprising of a connection... they may even consider him to be a figurative father of sorts.
