Does anyone know if there are any pictures posted anywhere on the net of the "beast" found dead in Maine this past weekend? I can't imagine not being able to look at it and say, "Well this looks like a _______ to me". I would really like to have a look at it and see for myself what I believe it might be.

sifl6000 didn't read that right. The DNA tests were for another 'mystery animal' killed previously.

The two residents who were quoted (husband and wife) were quoted as saying 'it was an evil-looking thing.'

Are we getting so out of touch with nature we can't identify a dog? Or is it simply that the journalist scoured the area for the ditziest people he could find?

And it is a dog... with a short blunt face. Probably a chow mix.

You ever notice when these mystery beasts like our Texas 'chupacabras' (coyotes with severe mange) are killed and it is announced DNA is being sent off to a lab for analysis, no one ever bothers to report the results to the public?

There was a single photo posted on Drudge - not sure if it's still there. According to the linked article no officials were willing to come look at the body while it was still fresh. Wish they'd called someone to take that sucker in to the nearest path lab and do a proper post-mortem. Now instead of answers we'll have eternal speculation and rumors.

IMO it looked like an odd canid of some sort - but it seemed to have sapphire blue eyes, which would be kind of weird. The muzzle is definitely doglike (or wolflike, if you prefer). I've seen funnier looking dogs, so 'mongrel' would be a reasonable hypothesis. AFAIK there are no DNA markers which will conclusively distinguish a wolf from a domestic dog, and I've read at least one paper theorizing that a small wolf population could go undetected in certain remote areas of New England.

Thanks to some lazy-@ss public officials, we'll never know now.

That is a really silly article...someone else posted a similar question and as I answered before...IT IS A DOG!!! I doubt it is a wolf hybrid because of the short muzzle, and as was stated before it looks the most like a Chow mix. I really thought it was funny that people said "It's evil looking" LMAO.... well I guess they havent seen a dead dog before and I laughed at the stench comment because of course ALL rotting flesh stinks bad. Seriously I sometimes wonder how people take these kind of reports seriously, I mean it can be clearly seen that it is a dog..... since when do rodents have canine teeth for eating meat? People need to get a grip out there because if that looks like a rodent to someone they really have no clue what a rodent looks like and I can't believe they have ever seen a dog... People are so gullible and ignorant it makes me sick, poor dog probably won't get a decent burial because of it, since everyone is wasting thier time trying to say it is a mystery creature when they should be trying to find the owner who obviously abandoned or lost the dog. They should be trying to find out if it was an abused dog and bring the owners to justice...or if it is a lost dog and bring the owners news of its death.

PS the eyes of just about every decomposing animal appear to be blue after they cloud over and start to rot... on top of that it is not unusual for dogs to have blue eyes.

I live in Maine and I heard it on the radio this morning on my way to work, apparently the Dept. of Wildlife here in the state doesn't want anything to do with it, at least that's what they're saying on the radio. They are also saying that there are more in the woods...sounds a little bit off to me. The radio station had more pictures because they had the printed out version of the newspaper and said it looked like a cross between a bear and a dog. Either way here is the link to our local newspaper for you to take a look yourself!

The article in from fox news says that DNA tests from a case YEARS ago resulted in being a hybrid...not this one, no DNA was taken.

Animal guard tell them your concern, they gained´t enable the dogs go through. you could ought to pay for the OP in month-to-month money however the dogs would be taken care of.maximum severe. yet there's a competent probability it is going to value in basic terms a donation to the animal middle; by way of fact the medical doctors there often are volunteers working for no longer something. they are able to in all likelihood use some volunteer artwork from you too. attempt it out.

Looks like a black Chow (dog) cross to me. You can get some wierd mutations with dogs. I work for a vet and one time we had a Min Pin come in and it's lower gaw stuck out two inches. Looked like a min pin except for the gaw.

The general consensus is that it is a mongrel , most possibly a coy-dog - a cross of some sort between a coyote, wolfe or dog.
