G.C.S.Es are for secondary school students and cover around 9 subjects of which you only choose 3 (and thats if you even get the choice and not get dumped in a random class like I did).
The results from these exams can be used to get a job or to get into a sixth form or college. Passes at this level range from A* to C
A-levels are taught in a sixth form and are in 3, 4 or 5 subjects that you choose. It takes two years and the course is split into two halves, AS and A2, you have to pass AS to continue onto A2.
These results are used to get a job or get into university. Passes at this level range from A to E. There is no A* (yet).

GCSE are a lower level exam you do when you are about 16 - you do GCSE's (usually about 5-10 of them) then (if you want) progress to A-Levels (usually 2-4 of them) 2 years later.
