Starship Troopers by Robert Heinlein. I've read it more times than I can remember. More of a commentary on civics and personal responsibility than hard sci-fi, but I think it still qualifies.

My favorite sci-fi book is "Mind of My Mind" by Octavia Butler. I must have read it at least 10 times and I still enjoy it. It was about this super alien by the name of Doro who spent centuries trying to breed a master race. He eventually creates the woman who will make this a reality, but she ends up having more power than he expected. I was never into sci-fi but an English professor recommended this author to me and I really enjoyed reading her work.

Pick one of the three:
1. The Chronicles of Thomas Covenant, by Stephen Donaldson (fantasy)
2. The Gap Series - also by Donaldson (sci-fi)
3. Ender's Game, by Orson Scott Card. (sci-fi, and maybe the single most engaging book I've ever read.)
I've probably only read them each maybe four times, as I try to widen my circle of reading.

"The Chronicles of Thomas Covenant" by Stephen R. Donaldson both series. Thomas Covenant was a great character.
Piers Anthony is a great sci-fi writer as well. I loved a series of his that was full of puns come to life. I read that many times, but I can't remember the name only story lines.

I remember reading Fahrenheit 451 in school by Ray Bradbury. The main Character Guy Montag was just doing his job burning books until he met a 17 year old girl and also a professor whom made him think outside his box...the issues raised in this book is just as relevant in today's world....Movies never do the books justice..

Amber Chronicles, by Roger Zelazny... Favorite character? Well I guess Corwin, because he's a total anti-hero... There are a few great scenes... Corwin, in his robe, with his sword on his side, sitting on his horse, watching the horizon... and then he puts his hand in his pocket, draws out a marborough cigarette and lights it.... :) What a combination?!
