You can play GBA games and DS games. I have a bunch of old Gameboy games that I can't play because my old gameboy went to pot. But yeah, on the DS you can only play the Game Boy Advance games and the Nintendo DS games. The size of the cartridges is different along with the pin connections needed for the cartridges.

Nintendo DS along with Nintendo Gameboy Micro, while being able to play GameBoy Advance games will not play games from the original GameBoy or GameBoy Color

All Gameboy Advance games may be played on the Nintendo DS Lite, just like the first Nintendo DS.

My sons say yes, they used the games they had before DS on their new DS, but to make absolutely sure, because I supposed your old Gameboy games may be an older type than my sons, you should call the store near you that sells DS, they'll know, or call Electronics department at Walmart and ask them. You cant play game boy color games, the old big squares but you can play the new long rectangles, game boy advance.
