I don't know what kind of class you're taking but were I in it with you, I and the instructor would have some very serious discussions. There is one basic function of language and any other aspect of it is at best a subdivision. The most basic function of language is communication, the oral transmission of information for whatever purpose. The content of the communication depends on the circumstances and the need arising from them. It don't get no simpler than that.
