the media since 9/11 have started to use the term 'islamaphobia' but does it actually exist? since 9/11 i have not experienced any hatred because i am a muslim or because i wear a Hijaab(Islamic headscarf) and i don't know of anyone who has been a victim of this 'islamaphobia'. i personally don't think it exists in our society becuase we British are not a rascist society.

It definently exists. Millions of people were schocked and outraged by 9/11, when people found out it was the act of Muslim terrorists the hatred of the religion then began to follow. The media started highlighting out the word Islam, rather than terrorist indicating its the religion that corrupts the people not the other way round. Non-Islamic people began stereotyping every Muslim as a terrorist, and thinking anyoone with a beard and a turban was carrying a bomb. You should check out some of the questions people post on Y!A about Islam, some of it is shocking the way in which people have no respect for the religion itself or the followers. I have Islamic friends who told me they are deeply hurt that their religion has been portrayed in such away and believe the terrorists are truly not Muslims if they can perform such terrible acts.

Phobia is defined by an irrational, uncontrollable and persistent fear........so yes, i do believe that people do fear those that follow the religion of Islam. After all, its not blue-eyed blond haired women that created 9/11, or strap bombs to their bodies, hence we will not second guess those that do not fall into the above categories. So yes, there is fear (uncontrollable, and persistent) and suspicion when people are around a Muslim, HOWEVER.....suspicion for a person is not the same as hate, at least not in my case. I would hate to think that any individual could be mean or harmful to another because of suspicion. Yes, the media can perpetuate hate mongering for all races nationalities, yet i wonder...will we start seeing more of the Muslim communities taking a stand against terrorism publicly? Taking control of their faith and say "no more" and actively fight against it!!

Of course it exists- even more so since 9/11. I'm not Muslim, but here in the West Indies we do where headscarves, long skirts and to some who doesn't understand Islam we may look Islamic-but just that it's so damn hot here we cover ourselves to keep cool. Because of our slave roots it's a part of our culture to dress that way, when tourist come here especially Americans instead of educating themselves in our culture they criticise it.

They are our neighbours but thank God we have not adapted the intolerance for certain cultures and religion, my daughter best friend in her old school is Muslim and her parents often talk about how difficult it is when they travel back home to Guyana going through the United States.

It exists nevertheless. I'm not a Muslim but I'm part of different despised sectors of society and looked upon ethnic groups. So I can identify a phobia when it arises, whether racism, homophobia, plain religious intolerance or rejection on social and economic grounds. Many people might not want to have Muslims neighbours, and I wonder if Muslims themselves fell free to open themselves up to non Muslim people.
At least, I see it as positive that naming the problem might enable us to be more aware of the situation and combat discrimination and intolerance.

The media are hatemongers. They just want to stir something up, even if it isn't there. For them it causes higher ratings. For us, the people affected by their manipulations, it causes anger, pain, shame, and grief. The media needs to stop. Don't you agree?
