5 years now and I have just over 9000 MP3's and I have not bought 1 lousy cd in the last 5 years. So if everyone is downloading and just copying these days, how else are they getting rich?

they really don't make that much off of album sales. It's the concerts and tours is where they make all the money

Sponsoring, commercials, concerts (merchandise circuses), clinics, and there are a whole bunch of other ways.

I'm a musician and basically what I keep in mind is that musicians should make music, like bakers should make bread and dough, butchers make nice packages of meat and copycats like you make copies. Maybe this is a trend that will affect all of society and we all going to make less money and more product.

With the increasing theft (as it is mostly called) of the entertainment industry's properties it would be wise if everybody, whether they do it or not would at some point in time be taxed for it. We all pay for army and police and a bunch of other things that we all need but not necessarily use personally. So why not come up with an entertainment tax that decriminalizes people like yourself and prevents that muscians and other artists will have to live marginal lives because of that. We all want entertainment after all! It would also be a cure for a lot of lousy music and movies and books to make it to the market for the simple reason that they won't get as many downloads. I'll start my lobby for this thing soon. You with me?

Most musicians do not make their money from cd sales. Touring and endorsements are much more lucrative. I still buy cds. I might download an mp3 to see if I like a song, but I would rather have hard copy backups of my music.

Most artists these days arent just artists. They have clothing lines and endorsement deals with products and they start thier own labels and the produce other ppl's music and they go into acting. Things like that. But most of the money comes from endorsement deals or other artists paying to have them in videos. They also get paid for concerts and public appearances.

Artists make plenty of money from MP3s being sold at ITunes and other legitimate sites.

Also, while sales are down, many people still do by CDs.

Advertisements, Movies, Restaurants, Clothing, Concerts, etc.

Try and watch VH1. They have episodes on the lives of musicians and how much money they make.

They have contracts with their record labels, they do advertisements for products and they tour. I don't think that CD sales contribute too much to their income.
