You can buy an "around the world" ticket from airlines that allow you to stop at various locations. Generally speaking, I think trains would be cheaper. Contact a travel agent for some of these ballpark prices. Make a general plan of what you want to do.

Oh wow. I did this, but it was years ago. When I graduated from High School in 1957, my parents gave me a backpack, a one month Euthrail pass and $1000 and told me to come home when I was done roaming. I used up the European travel and kept going East. It took me about a year to get home and I wouldn't trade the memories for a $Million dollars. I know I came back a different person and you will too.

I learned how to do EVERYTHING cheaply. I slept on trains. I slept on the car ferries. I even slept in parks, but during the daytimes only... kept on the move at night.

I had absolutely NO travel agenda... I would have been a nightmare for any travel agent.

If you go entirely around the world, it takes, as you have figured, about a year, but don't tie yourself down to getting back at any particular date and time.

NEVER be tempted to pack anything more than just your backpack... and keep the weight as low as possible... 40 pounds was about the most I wanted to lug around.

Consider working for your passage when you have to cross bodies of water and washing dishes for food is honorable in any country.

I would imagine that $2000 to $3000 would cover your expenses for a year, combined with whatever you can make by doing odd jobs. You will learn how to make friends with the locals and they are always good sources for a place to crash, a bite to eat and any non-skilled jobs in the area.

Keep a log of what you do and where you go and send a copy home for your parents to keep while you are on the road. It can make a very good book once you get home and have time to write one... or provide years of memories when you get older and can't do the living out of a backpack any longer.

I'm envious.
