Without seeing a therapist and finding out why he's so depressed, you should continue doing what you're doing. Be genuinely impressed, and tell him so, whenever he does nice things to you, the kids, other people. Constantly thank him for the great job he's doing, etc. Build him up!
You're a good wife to be concerned . . .

Bravo on your husband getting a job! And that you do your best to be a supportive wife! No husband/spouse could ask for more!
Only God truly knows what he needs in life right now. The best thing you can do is be there and continue to love him (don't patronize him of course, most people hate that). Find out why he feels empty and pay attention. It may not be so much in what he says as in what he sees around him. Perhaps, like many of us, he wants more than the usual life.
As a Christian, I would ask you to look for Jesus because in my personal experience, a personal relationship with your creator and Heavenly Father changes a lot of things BUT understandably, that's up to you. I sincerely hope both you and your husband find the real answer, whatever it may be.

Keep encouraging him, appreciate his work as well as challenge him to make him feel he is really wanted. Person, especially men, who is in un-employed period for quite some time usually go through this stage of feeling un-wanted and un-worthy. Someone closest like you and his children are the best person to bring him back to his real own life. Be patient, I'm sure you will have him back soon. Bless you

help to show him how much you need him. Give him a sense of being needed. Have him do things that help him grow as a person, he probably feels this way because he doesn't feel like he has anything to offer, in terms of; family, financialy, emotionaly, or physicaly even.

He needs to see a Dr. it may be more than psychological, it may be physical. If the physician can't find anything he can recommend a good therapist.
