The short definitions.
To start with all are vertebrates.
1. Amphibians: Cold blooded. Lay eggs. Smooth skin. At some point in their lives all amphibians are aquatic and have gills. Most will lose the gills at some point and develop lungs to breath air. Some retain their gills. Examples: frogs, toads, salamanders.
2. Reptiles. Cold blooded, lay eggs. Some will carry and hatch the eggs internally (like some snakes) Skin has scales. The will periodically shed their skin. Examples: Snakes, lizards, tortoises, crocodilians
3.Mammals. The primary characteristic of mammals is they produce milk and nurse their young. Warm blooded. Most have hair. Most are placental, there are a few that lay eggs and then there are the marsupials that give birth to very underdeveloped babies which are then developed in a pouch instead in internally. Examples: apes, kangaroos, dogs, cats, whales
4. Fish. all are vertebrates, cold blooded, get their from the water oxygen though gills. most lay eggs, some develop young internally and are livebearers. Some have a cartilaginous skeleton (sharks and rays) while other are bony. Examples: guppies, eels, flounders. Although sometimes you see things like lobsters, clams, octopus, jellyfish lumped in with fish they are not - they are all invertebrates and not fish.
5. Birds. Warm blooded vertebrates, all are egg layers. Have feathers, hollow bones and beaks. The prevailing theory today is birds are descended from dinosaurs. Examples: penguins, eagles, pelican.

1. Like birds, reptiles, mammals, and fishes, amphibians are vertebrates –- that is, creatures with a backbone and an internal skeleton. Amphibians live part of their life in water and part on land. Even those species that lay eggs on land start life in a fluid-filled egg, breathing through gills. (Frogs, Toads, Salamanders)
2. All reptiles are cold-blooded, which is why they warm themselves in the sun, and have bodies covered in dry, horny scales. Some reptiles lay eggs; others give birth to live young. (Crocodilians, Lizards, Snakes, Turtles)
3. Mammals live on land, at sea, in the air, and under the ground. All mammals, from bats to whales, share a number of important traits that make them different from other animals. Mammals are warm-blooded, they have fur or hair, and most mammals give birth to live young (rather than laying eggs). (Primates, Rodents, Elephants)
4. Fishes come in an amazing variety of shapes and colors, but they all have three important things in common: All fishes live in water, have fins, and use gills to get oxygen from the water. We have also included a few sea creatures -- some jellyfish and octopods -- in this category. (Eels, Cod, Sharks)
5. Birds are warm-blooded creatures, like mammals, but they lay eggs, like most reptiles. All birds have feathers and wings, and most birds are able to fly. Birds are amazingly varied in their shapes, sizes, colors, and behavior patterns. There are more than 9,000 different species of birds in the world. (Hummingbirds, Owls, Seagulls)
