My sister had been introduced to an oriental man whose name was Chai, and he said it is to be pronounced Tai. Is the name Chai from the Orient always pronounced Tai ( as we pronounce tie)?

I've always heard "Chai" in the case of the tea pronounced "chy", rhymes with sky, "ch" as in "church". Your sister's oriental friend is no doubt correct regarding the proper oriental pronunciation, as with a lot of foreign words and names, it appears "tie" has been anglocised to "chy".

Some "authorities" pronounce Chai as "Shy."
Looks like whatever a buyer chooses to call it is "correct."
