I can at least respect the Welsh for being able to speak welsh!

Only about 5% of the Scottish can speak Scots Gaelic and it is now officially classed as a dying language. My question could alternatively be: 'Should the Scots vent their national pride by learning and embracing their own language and culture rather than slagging off England for it's own sake?'

Nice answers from sonicdethmonkey1983 and Sarah Q, by the way.

The Americans' and Australians' native language is english - despite previously having an indiginous population before they settled there.

Only if the English are willing to learn English rather than ruinning it. Home counties English right? Have you ever heard a Jana and a Geordie try to have a conversation? Or a Scouser and a Norfolkian? Or a Cockney and a Brummie? English is different all over England, so why gripe about how the Scots speak it?

And you could argue that we English should learn our own language because over the years we have ruined Aenglish which was the tongue used by the saxons who created England. In fact, we've managed to ruin German and Latin at the same time!

And if you have a problem with the Scots, why not have a go at the Canadians, Americans, Australians, New Zealanders, Nigerians, South Africans and the rest of the world that uses English as a first language? None of them are exact English, but as stated, our language has many influences which means that we have ruined English too. We've mangled German, Latin, French, Celtic, Hindi, Spanish, Hebrew and a few others. And Shakespeare made up about a quarter of it.

English is a hybrid language which needs exterior influences to help it grow and move on. And I, for one, love hearing a bit of Scotch. Almost as much as I love drinking it!

Er...hello? English is the culmination of ruining several other languages. Its roots are so widespread!

Many Scots do speak Gaelic, but for some reason most English people have such an aversion to learning ANY other language that there would be no point in speaking it.
Just as many Irish people speak Irish Gaelic - but who else would understand it other than another Irish person.

And Americans? At least the Scots can spell, and speak with the same cadence as places lower down GB.

And I'm not Scottish by the way, I just happen to respect regional differences.

Edit: -
The person above me got it right in my opinion :)

The Scottish lowlands and some northern parts speak Scots not Gaelic.Scots developed from invading tribes in the north east and south east of modern Scotland.English as you understand it developed from Scots language mixing with Anglo Saxon. So if you had spoken to an "English speaker "1000 years ago they would have sounded more like a Geordie than the Queen. The royal family are of German extraction and Queen Victoria spoke German at home with her children hence the development of what you understand as BBC English

How are the Scots ruining English? What part of England are you from? Should any parts of England that also speak with a regional dialect not also then be made to speak Queens English? And why stop at the Scots, what about the Welsh and the Irish?

Nice question, idiot.

We do have our own language! (Gaelic). We are a part of Britain why shouldn't we speak the same language? No wonder there are all these problems between the Scots and the English!!! there is much more in this world to be concerned about!!!!!

hmm, the Scots have their own tv channel & radio station in gaelic - like the Welsh though we have adopted English as the main language to make it easier for more people to understand us.

Your question is worse than asking why Americans or Australians speak English and don't have their own languages!

English is the universal language - surely you'd complain more if we all spoke gaelic and you didn't understand a word...especially as there are so many of us living in England LOL

There are so many english dialects I don't think to isolate the Scottish is fair. I have a Yorkshire accent should we have our own language? How about scousers, geordies, brummies etc, and we haven't left England yet...

I think the English do a good enough job of ruining the English language themselves.
