Uganda is a beautiful land-locked country that borders Lake Victoria. It used to be called the 'Pearl of Africa' and is built on seven hills. The rest below tells why it use to be called the Pearl of Africa.
" Charles Miller describes the turn of the century Uganda as "set in a diadem of roller-coaster hills, spattered with the glowing embers of tropical flowers, brightened with clouds of butterflies and sweetened with the conversation of a million tropical birds." Speke wrote, "I was immensely struck with its excessive beauty ... wherever I strolled I saw nothing but richness." Stanley called Uganda simply, "The Pearl of Africa." At independence it was essentially voted "the most likely to succeed" of it east Africa partners."
A pearl is actually a smooth, lustrous, variously colored, cream whitish gem formed in the shells of certain mollusks in the sea . It is very precious and each one is sold at a value. Women wear this in jewelry as they would a diamond. They are found by divers who take high risks and go through a lot of difficulty to get them- they are a rare find .
In the context given above referring to Uganda as a pearl- the people meant it was a rare in beauty and wonderous.

Winston Churchill was so besotted by the country that he gave it the name that has endured: the "Pearl of Africa". His observations about Uganda remain true today: "The scenery is different, the vegetation is different, the climate is different, and, most of all, the people are different from anything elsewhere ...in the whole range of Africa"
Uganda offers exceptional diversity combining some of the best features that Africa has to offer. It is a country blessed with contrasting physical features ranging from extensive plains with undulating hills, to snow-capped mountains, waterfalls, meandering rivers and spectacular flora and fauna. Uganda is the source of the Nile River and Africa's largest body of fresh water, Lake Victoria. Its great beauty led Winston Churchill to refer to it as the "Pearl of Africa." Most Americans are familiar with Uganda, as it is the home to the Silver Back Gorillas in Bandeau National Park (see below). In fact, Uganda considers its environment as one of its most important resources.

It was Winston Churchill, at the beginning of the century, who said "...for magnificence, for variety of form and colour, for profusion of brilliant life - plant, bird, insect, reptile, beast - for the vast scale... Uganda is truly "the pearl of Africa".
Uganda, in the heart of East Africa, is full of the wonders of nature. With landscapes ranging from snowcapped peaks, through broad savannah and tropical rainforests to arid deserts, as well as significant wetlands, Uganda is undoubtedly a special place.
Nestling in the western arm of the African Rift Valley, Uganda has flora and fauna species found in both East and West Africa, as well as an amazing range of its own endemic species.
