No, they normally don't. For your information all people use the same finger to push buttons. They do it differently only when they realise that you are there. Now, I do not know why they want to do this. May be you look lovely when wondering or perplexed, or may be they just want to tease you because you have not been very nice to them sometimes. This is for you to think and figure out. But rest assured all people are in total agreement about what finger is to be used for pushing lift operations. Beside, they are very good typists. May be you need to know about people and this what they are trying to tell you!

Well it depends how many floors there are in the building. If there are loads, then the button panel is going to be quite long and narrow which means that its easier to reach the bottom buttons with your little finger and the top buttons with your index finger.

I don't like germs so I use my pinkie finger just in case I then have to touch my face. When ever possible, I will use my arm, elbow or cover my hand with my sweater to avoid touching things with my hand. I have an illness that makes me catch every germ I come across so I have to do this, no nut case here, just self preservation.

An Englishman asked and American, "Why do you call it an elevator? It is called a lift."
The American replied, "I should know what to call the the thing! It was invented in America!"
The Englishman answered, "Yes, that's true. But the language was invented in England."

its more of a reflex action...which ever finger is closest to the required botton as well as the comfort in using a pacticular finger all play a part in the decision on which finger one uses.

To stop their fingers from changing shape, in the same way they do when using a keyboard.

Because if you only used one finger, the poor owner of it would be stuck in there all the time - and they might be claustrophobic - how bad would that be?
